Shutter Speed Explained

Let’s be real—understanding your camera’s shutter speed isn’t just about getting the correct exposure. It’s the key to unlocking creative control over your images.

As a professional photographer working all over New Jersey, New York, and Austin (and frequently traveling throughout the U.S.), I use shutter speed not only to freeze motion or let in light—but also to add artistic flair and emotion to my shots.

If you’re still relying on auto mode or aren’t fully confident in how shutter speed affects your final image, this post is for you.

What Is Shutter Speed—And Why Should You Care?

Shutter speed refers to how long your camera’s sensor is exposed to light. The longer it’s open, the more light gets in—and the more movement you might see. The shorter the duration, the sharper and more frozen the action.

But here’s the fun part: shutter speed doesn’t just help you avoid blurry photos—it’s how you create dynamic, cinematic, and sometimes magical images.

For example:

  • A fast shutter speed (like 1/1000) freezes movement—perfect for confetti tosses or couples running down a beach in Austin.

  • A slow shutter speed (like 1/15 or even 1 second) can capture the motion blur of a twirling wedding dress in New York or dreamy waterfall shots in the New Jersey countryside.

It’s not just technical. It’s intentional.

My Favorite Creative Techniques Using Shutter Speed

In my video, I break down how I use shutter speed for more than just getting sharp photos. I use it to:

  • Blur motion artistically—like during a couple's first dance

  • Add drama to a city scene by capturing light trails

  • Freeze emotional micro-moments that pass in a split second

  • Combine with flash for that signature pop + blur effect

Whether I’m photographing a romantic garden wedding in Princeton, an elopement in downtown Austin, or a styled editorial in Manhattan, shutter speed helps me tell a story my way.

Gear Doesn’t Matter—Vision Does

You don’t need the fanciest camera to make shutter speed work for you. What matters most is knowing how and when to use it. In the video, I also share a few sample images and walk through how I chose each setting based on my environment, subject, and goal.

Bonus: Practice Tips for Mastering Shutter Speed

To get hands-on with what I teach in the video, try this:

  1. Find motion: Think cars, people walking, or even your dog running.

  2. Take 3 shots—one at 1/1000, one at 1/60, and one at 1 second.

  3. Compare the results and notice how drastically different each photo feels.

Understanding shutter speed gives you options—and that’s where the real creativity begins.

Final Thoughts

Mastering shutter speed changed my photography. It gave me the freedom to shoot how I want and tell stories the way I see them. Whether you’re shooting weddings in New Jersey, lifestyle sessions in New York, or engagement shoots under the Austin skyline, this one setting can elevate your work overnight.
