Easy Tips for Backlit Pictures for Beginners! | Canon EOS R7 + RF 35mm f1.8

english photography tips posing + portraits
Backlit Portraits

If you’ve ever struggled with photos that turn out too dark or washed out when shooting into the sun, this guide is for you. In this video, I break down easy backlighting techniques using the Canon EOS R7 and RF 35mm f1.8 lens - perfect for beginners looking to master natural light and add that dreamy glow to their portraits or lifestyle photos.

Whether you're practicing photography in a sunny park in New Jersey, capturing golden hour in Austin, or shooting client work in New York City, these tips will help you achieve that warm, professional backlit look, without needing advanced gear.

What Is Backlighting?

Backlighting simply means your subject is between you and the light source, typically the sun. While it can create beautiful halo effects and glowing skin tones, it can also lead to underexposed or hazy images if not handled carefully.

This video shows you how to:

  • Position your subject to make use of soft edge light

  • Adjust your camera settings for correct exposure

  • Use the EOS R7’s tools to nail focus even in strong sunlight

Gear Used

  • Camera: Canon EOS R7

  • Lens: Canon RF 35mm f1.8
This combo is lightweight, sharp, and versatile - perfect for lifestyle photographers, bloggers, or anyone learning photography.

My Go-To Backlighting Tips

Here are a few tips I cover in the video that make all the difference when shooting backlit:

☀️ 1. Use Spot Metering

This helps the camera expose for your subject’s face, not the bright background.

🔍 2. Tap to Focus on the Eyes

The EOS R7’s eye-tracking is excellent, but tapping the screen to confirm focus makes sure you’re locked onto the right spot.

🌿 3. Use Natural Objects to Block the Sun

Placing your subject near trees, fences, or anything that diffuses the sunlight gives you more control and less lens flare.

📷 4. Slightly Overexpose

Backlighting can make your subject look darker than they are. Bump up your exposure slightly to keep skin tones bright and natural, then fine-tune in Lightroom.

Who Should Try This?

  • Beginner photographers learning to shoot in manual mode

  • Lifestyle, family, and portrait shooters looking for soft, glowy effects

  • Anyone using the Canon EOS R7 or similar mirrorless cameras

Final Thoughts

Backlighting doesn’t have to be tricky. With the right settings, some basic composition tips, and a reliable setup like the Canon EOS R7 + RF 35mm, you can create gorgeous images that wow your clients—or just make your personal photos look way more professional.
